Lithium-sulfur batteries have been regarded as one of the next-generation high-energy density storage devices. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfide is one of the notable challenges for the practical use of lithium-sulfur batteries, especially in the high-polarity electrolytes. Zhao and coworkers demonstrate a proof-of-concept study to address this issue by constructing a two-phase electrolyte that is composed of a high-polarity electrolyte and a low-polarity electrolyte. The low-polarity electrolyte not only has good compatibility and superwettability to Li metal, but also shows the block effect of polysulfide in the two-phase electrolyte. Such unique twophase electrolytes can substantially improve the Coulombic efficiency and cyclic stability of lithium-sulfur batteries (see the article on page 505).
