The End of Heat: A Poetic Farewell to Summer
As the lingering heat of summer starts to dissipate, we echo the words of the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi: ‘The distant heat clouds scatter, and the gentle cool breeze begins to rise.’ This is the poetic essence of ‘Chu Shu’, the solar term that marks the end of the sweltering season.
随着夏日的余热开始消散，我们回响着唐代诗人白居易的诗句：“离离暑云散，袅袅凉风起。”这是对“处暑”这一节气的诗意诠释，标志着炎热季节的结束。
Chu Shu, the 14th of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar and also the second solar term of autumn, signifies the cessation of the intense heat. The term “Chu” means “to cease”, indicating that the unbearable heat is nearing its end. However, we must also be vigilant for the “Autumn Tiger”, a period of sudden warm weather that can occur after Chu Shu.
处暑，秋季的第二个节气，意味着酷热的结束。“处”字意味着“停止”，表明难以忍受的高温即将结束。然而，我们也要警惕“秋老虎”，这是处暑之后可能出现的一段突然回暖的天气。
In Hunan Province, the arrival of Chu Shu is met with unique traditions. Locals indulge in the consumption of duck, believed to clear the body’s heat and prepare for the cooler months ahead. The release of river lanterns is another custom, symbolizing the letting go of the summer’s heat and the welcoming of autumn’s tranquility.
在湖南，处暑的到来伴随着独特的传统。当地人喜欢食用鸭子，认为这可以清除体内的热量，为即将到来的凉爽月份做准备。放河灯是另一种习俗，象征着释放夏日的热气，迎接秋天的宁静。
Embrace the “End of Heat” with a sense of renewal, as we transition into the crispness of autumn, while keeping an eye out for the “Autumn Tiger”. Let the traditions of Chu Shu usher in a season of harvest and togetherness.”
