"You see the gray shade of the ear?" "The hairline is shaking." "And over there, it keeps flickering..."
As she watched the film projected on the screen, Zhu Siying's sharp eyes caught flaws that a layperson would easily miss. As a film preservationist, keen observation is a fundamental skill.

Aging film stock often suffers from a range of issues including dust, mildew and flickering.
These require digital restoration to "make them as original as possible". Even with the help of AI, the complexity of this job is still beyond most people's imagination.

"AI can handle 70 to 80 percent of the work, but the remaining parts still require manual restoration," Wang Rui, also a film preservationist, said.
In the studio of the Anxi Digital Resource Center of the China Film Archive, young film preservationists work meticulously on films from the last century. With their left hands, they quickly press keyboards to compare frames and identify issues; with their right hands, they drag the mouse to fix the visual defects by selecting and rectifying specific areas. "Some of our colleagues already need to use pain relievers," Wang Rui said with a smile.

"The process is tedious, but the result is very fulfilling," Zhu Siying added.
In 2021, over the span of more than seven months, Zhu and her team restored and colorized over 165,000 frames, eventually presenting China's first feature to be converted from black-and-white to a 4K digital color format — The Eternal Wave — to the audience.
On the big screen, the dust and gravel at the foot of the Yan'an Pagoda Hill and the wrinkles in the military uniform of the protagonist Li Xia were vividly clear. Even after watching it many times, Zhu was still engrossed by the clarity of these familiar scenes. "The sharpness draws you closer to the film, allowing you to rediscover many details and magnify your emotions."

These specific details contribute to the collective memory of the Chinese people. Familiar viewers immerse themselves in nostalgia, while new audiences learn about the lives of their parents' generation through these details. "Some viewers said that it's not just a film that's being restored, but the memories of several generations," Zhu said.
As the era of telegraphs reappears on screen with the film's re-release, it is being escorted into the distant future by the preservationists. "Film preservation is a race against time," Wang Rui said. "The mold on film spreads faster the longer if it's left untreated, so we hope more young people join us in this effort to restore old films, ensuring that their significance remains alive for future generations."
