画中游出自乾隆帝的梦境，在《颐和园趣闻》中曾记录，乾隆梦醒之后，依据梦中景致画下画卷，并取名“画中游”，这是一处极具山地特色的园中园。它的亭柱巧妙地构成了画幅的画框，游人仿佛置身于山水画卷之中。
The Dream Within the Painting (Hua Zhong You), originated from Emperor Qianlong's dream. Recorded in Anecdotes of the Summer Palace, after waking from the dream, Emperor Qianlong painted a scroll based on the dream scenery and named it The Dream Within the Painting. This area within the Summer Palace is a garden within a garden, featuring distinctive mountainous characteristics. The pavilion pillars cleverly form the frame of the painting, immersing visitors as if they were inside a landscape painting.
颐和园画中游今年经过修缮后重新开放，这里的亭台楼阁倚山而筑，高低错落，由画中游楼、爱山楼、借秋楼及游廊等组成。视野开阔，还可以俯瞰到昆明湖景和西山，漫游于此仿佛置身于山水画卷中，故名“画中游”。
